红球藻是一种能够适应极地和高山雪地等极端环境的单细胞绿藻，它能抵御低温、高光照、强紫外辐射、高盐、贫营养等胁迫条件。在休眠状态下主要依靠合成特殊的细胞成分来适应极端环境并保护修复细胞及 DNA损伤、膜脂质和酶的氧化损伤，包括类胡萝卜素、不饱和脂肪酸、胞外多糖、酚类物质和游离脯氨酸等。在胁迫条件下细胞能够在叶绿体外的脂质球中合成并积累大量的虾青素(astaxanthin)，并覆盖在叶绿体表面，可吸收大量光线从而保护了光合作用器。同时它又是自由基的强大淬灭剂，其抗氧化活性是维生素 E 的 550 倍、类胡萝卜素的 10 倍，被誉为“超级抗氧化剂”，因而减少了光抑制和光氧化损伤。这也是红球藻最重要的抗氧化保护机制之一，由此保证了细胞生存所必需的物质和能量来源。富含类胡萝卜素的红色细胞在紫外线诱导下还能合成酚类物质和游离的脯氨酸，它们能够协助保护细胞抵抗 UV带来的损伤。红色不动细胞中含有大量单不饱和脂肪酸，能够降低细胞冰点，保证了细胞膜在低温下有足够的流动性，从而维持细胞正常的代谢活性。
